The Book in America
This is an important reference book for public libraries, school and college libraries -- an exceedingly useful and competent survey of books, their production and distribution, from the Colonial Days to the present. There is a vast amount of sound fact, a good deal that stimulates the imagination. Perhaps there was no place for a more dramatic handling of the material, but one can see where this might have been made livelier reading. However, it is a serious study, done in collaboration with Ruth Shepard Granniss and Lawrence C. Wroth -- a work that was needed. - Kirkus Review.
