Dolled up to die

When Cate Kinkaid gets a frantic call about a triple homicide, she drives to the scene against her better judgment -- isn't this more up the police department's alley? -- to find that the victims are not who she expects. Cate adds a new rule to her list for assistant private investigators: always find out if the victims actually have human DNA. But who would shoot this nice lady's dolls? And then there's the discovery of another victim, definitely human.
