In 1847, the Austrian painter Leopold Kupelwieser (1796-1862) was commissioned to execute a fresco cycle in the Ceremonial Hall of the Niederösterreichische Statthalterei (Lower Austrian Government Building, Vienna), depicting scenes from Austrian history.
