In 1537, amid a violent struggle for power and religion, the last Catholic Archbishop of Norway, Olav Engelbrektsson, fled to the Netherlands of Charles V. On his flight, the prelate took a large part of the treasure from the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim to Deventer : the axe of Saint Olav, two crowns, chalices, monstrances and other valuables. This book follows the trail of the Archbishop, his retinue and the treasures of the church. A long search in archives and museums yields a surprising story about exile, diplomacy and Norwegian heritage in the Habsburg Netherlands at the beginning of the Reformation.
