The new objectivity broke with the development of modernism towards abstraction to instead reconnect to a realistic imagery with roots in the Renaissance. With this imagery, the artists portrayed the world around them. The images express fascination as well as concern about new technology and social change. For the first time, the Swedish new objectivity is presented in an international context where both similarities and national characteristics emerge. With an extensive selection of paintings and works on paper from different countries, the exhibition paints the picture of a dynamic cultural climate during a dramatic time.
