The Pictorialists. A photographic art outside the academies' is the first presentation of the earliest Danish art photography, pictorialism: an ambiguous, evocative, intimate symbolist world of images created in the period 1890 to 1920. The book is the result of several years of research into an overlooked period of Danish photographic history. Pictorialism is described as photography's' second birth 'by virtue of the photographers' serious, artistically conscious preoccupation with the medium. It was a generation of artistically ambitious photographers with high ideals and passion for photography. In an international environment, they arranged exhibitions at home and abroad, and in the photographic amateur clubs, they educated themselves and sought out the latest knowledge about the technology and aesthetics of the medium.
