Glass in Byzantium

From the Balkans to Egypt, from Asia Minor and North Africa to the Middle East, producted of Byzantine glassworks may be found. The glassware trade of Byzantium was not an economic enterprise to be underestimated. Forms of glassware specific to certain regions and raw materials allow connections to the places of manufacture and to the trade routes that the fragile product traveled. Vom Balkan bis Ägypten, von Kleinasien und Nordafrika bis in den Nahen Osten finden sich Erzeugnisse der byzantinischen Glaswerkstätten. Der Glashandel war nicht nur in Byzanz ein nicht zu unterschätzender Wirtschaftsfaktor. Regionalspezifische Glasformen oder Rohstoffe ermöglichen Rückschlüsse auf den Herstellungsort und auf die Handelswege, auf denen die zerbrechliche Ware Glas reiste.
