La vida entre el judaísmo y el cristianismo en la Nueva España, 1580-1606
Discusses the sad reality of Converso life in colonial Mexico by following the story of the Díaz Nieto family. After the forced conversion of the Jews of Portugal in 1497, members of the family fled to Ferrara, then to other countries, and finally established themselves in Mexico, where they became involved with the crypto-Jewish community. Diego Díaz Nieto was condemned to a light prison sentence in the same auto-da-fé in which Luis de Carvajal and Manuel de Lucena perished in 1596. Diego and his father Ruy were subsequently tried for Judaizing between 1601-06, and barely escaped life sentences due to papal grace. Includes the proceedings of the trials.
