During Reconstruction, white plantation owners in the Mississippi Delta imported Chinese sharecroppers in the hope of replacing their black laborers. though a vast social and economic gulf still separates black from white, the Chinese have made an astounding transition: originally classed with negroes, they are now viewed as essentially white.
