Since childhood, I read stories about Cambodian history but no book has brought me closer to the Cambodian people than IN THE SHADOW OF THE BANYAN. Vaddey Ratner's writing is so magical that it enables me enter into the life of Raami, taste the food she eats, hears the songs she listens to, feel the love of her family and experience the terror that they have to go through including violence, deaths, starvation, forced labor... But more than terror, this book is about courage and beauty and the resilience of the human spirit. Raami is young but she teaches us so much about the world, what it takes to survive, the need for humans to love each other more, and the need for us to make peace instead of wars. I highly recommend IN THE SHADOW OF THE BANYAN to anyone who is looking for a good book to read. I hope you will enjoy the beautiful language in this book as much as I do.Please sign in to leave a comment
